Silence in Dancing

I find it difficult to talk or think about problems when I am dancing.  It seems the music and dancing crowd out the mind noise for 3-4 minutes at a time.  It is a time for peace.  I call it meditation without the lumpy pillow.

I believe that God is in the silence. That is where I go for comfort and strength.  Dancing makes it easy to go inside and activate my spirit....while getting a great workout too!!!

West Coast Swing Brings Out Creativity

Being creative is an expression of our thoughts and feelings.  Painters, sculptors, and sketch artists create images or things out of our minds.  Creativity brings out the inner child of ourselves.  We are made to create.

One of the aspects of West Coast Swing is being able to create expressions to music with a partner.  Some of the greatest moves come from "mistakes".  I was dancing with a lady last night.  I was playing with all of the &s and as of the song. It was fun seeing what was created from it; how she would react.

Dancers....create! Don't be afraid to step out of the "box" - maybe in this case out of the "sugar push".

Meaning of Black Friday

Black Friday got it's name back in September 1869 because of financial panic sparked by gold speculators.  It also has been used as a name for the stock market crashes.  Retailers use the term because that is when they go from losses to profits - red to black ink.

The Turkey (Fox) Trot

The Turkey Trot was one of several influences on Slow Foxtrot and the more quicker American Foxtrot.  Other dances in that era having an influence were The Shimmy, The Bunny Hop, and The Cakewalk.

It is widely believed that vaudeville actor Harry Fox in 1914 created the Foxtrot but there are other theories and influences.  Vernon and Irene Castle brought the dance out with their smoothness.

Foxtrot is a great social and competitive dance with gliding steps and a fun, ragtime feel.

Attract Positive Energy

When we partner dance, the energies of the individuals overlap.  Emit positive energy and the dance will be great.  Be negative and that dance may be a disaster.  Attract positive energy by resonating positive.

Here are 7 ways to attract positive energy into your life.  Take that positive energy to the next dance:

1. Clean and organize - things and thoughts
2. See and create positive energy
3. Be at peace; be an instrument of peace.
4. No worry or guilt - we all make mistakes.
5. Love your neighbor; love yourself
6. Receive and give - it's reciprocal
7. Words have consequences - watch your thoughts, watch your words

Be positive... be happy.

Communication on the Dance Floor

Communication on the dance floor is like communicating in real life.  In dancing, the leader communicates to the follower how to reflect the music.  Most followers are not mind readers, they depend on what the leader communicates.  If the lead is too light, then the follower may not "hear".  If the lead is too heavy or rough, then the follower will just "turn off".  Dancing is a two-way conversation even though we label it lead/follow.  As a leader, I listen to the feedback and adjust.  Last night, a lady complained about being pulled and pushed.  Guys, move yourself and the ladies will follow.  Ladies tune into the leader.  Sometimes ladies are paying attention to everything but their partner.
Bottom line, be nice, look for feedback, and tune into each other.

Dancing Tonight @ USA Dance Treasure Coast

I am attending the USA Dance Treasure Coast dance tonight.  It's a gathering of 100+ people for the sole purpose of dancing.  Some people ask me why I go when there are so many inexperienced dancers being that I am advanced.  My simple answer is dancing is not about me.  It is about sharing the joy of dancing with others.

When we take our ego out of the equation, we bring more joy and love to ourselves and those around us.  If we engage our spirit, dancing becomes fun.  When I see two dancers engaged with each other, I tend to want to watch.  I can turned off when I watch pushing and pulling.

Like most things in life, we make choices.  We can dance with our ego or dance with love.  We can make it about ourselves or we can work together.  Dancing is a 3-4 minute relationship.  Make it a good one.

Knowing Who I Am

Yesterday I attended the Special Needs Dance Showcase in Orlando.  The Special Needs dancers danced with their heart and full of joy.  They were very present in the task of performance.

So how does that tie in knowing who I am.  It ties in because I had spent most of my life trying to be what others wanted me to be instead of being present with who I am.  When I know who I am then my unique qualities can come out.  I can be my authentic self.  Those Special Needs people were authentic and real.  A sort of innocence that I lost for so many years.

Life is a lot easier when you know who you are.  You can find your passion and stay on your path easier. Your relationships resonate with the same frequency. Be #authentic.

Special Needs Showcase in Orlando - 11/23/14

One of the most rewarding thing I have ever done in my life was the Special Needs dance programs in Orlando.  I had the opportunity to dance in two sessions with Emily.  She and the other students/dancer taught me more about dancing and life than I could get anywhere.  A simple Box step brings joy to these beautiful people.  It reminded me that it is the simple things in life is what should bring us joy.  Also, they are so grateful for everything you give them.  I guess that is the definition of love.  The lady that I had the opportunity was so adorable.  Her mom and grandma came to watch her dance.  They were all smiles.  It was so heartwarming to receive a card from her the day of showcase.

Tomorrow I am driving to Orlando to watch this year's showcase to put a smile on my face...and see what else I can learn.

What is Dancepiration?

Dancepiration is a fusion of the beauty of dance with what inspires us.  There are no bad days when I am dancing. Dancepiration is a lifelong dream of the intersection of dance and faith.  These two elements collided together to show me who I am.  It inspired me to find my authentic self.  My dancing would not exist without faith.  My faith wouldn't have been exposed without dancing.  So here is the fusion of these two elements.

The purpose of Dancepiration is to share with the reader the awesome stories about ballroom and other forms of dance.  It is also an opportunity to read and share inspirational thoughts and stories about everyday life.

Dancepiration is also a place that people can learn and dance.  It is a place to feel welcomed and a place to dance.  The dancer should feel confident and inspired when he or she leaves the studio.  It is like a feel good movie where the dancer is the star.
